Note: To enable the Threat Coloring, go into the Interface menu, and change Display>Display Aggro Warning toAlways.
Tidy Plates ... modifies the standard unit nameplates, making them a little bit cleaner.
It's gotten rave reviews:

Features: Casting Bar: Integrated with Health bar Threat Glow: Shows three levels of threat (Low, High, Aggro). Raid Icons.
Threat Glow Explanation: Greenish Yellow: Low threat, Not attacking you. Yellow: High threat, but not yet attacking. Red: Aggro, Attacking you.
Also, the Threat Glow graphic will change, depending on the unit: Regular mobs have a simple glowing border around the nameplate, while Elite mobs get the 'glowing sword' graphic. This should help in instances, quickly identifying the more dangerous elites. (In the screen-shot, it mistakenly shows the 'glowing sword' graphic on normal mobs.. that's for display purposes only, to show off the art) :-)
Another Note: Take a look under "Optional Files"; There's several themes available.

Can you increase the range of the nameplates? Sorry, but no; Addon authors have no control over where or when the nameplates spawn. Support for an increased view distance rests in the hands of Blizzard.
What about a GUI for customization? It's something that I've talked about doing, for a while. I've been concentrating on making sure that the theme system works well, before tackling the GUI. It's a long term goal.
